I'm using 1.8.0.5, and I don't seem to be able to extend a selection to my left past the screen.  It just stops there.  The function seems normal when drag-selecting right.

This drag-selecting offscreen is something I do a lot.  I'm wondering if there is a way to control the scroll speed when dragging off the edges left or right.

I'm not sure I see what you mean.

If you click and drag to select, if your mouse gets close to the edges of the window, it will automatically scroll the waveform. Is it this behavior that is not working with you when you drag to the left? I have never had any issue with this.

It is currently not possible to control the speed of this dragging other than dragging further away from the edges of the window.

Now it is working normally.  I'm not sure what triggered that behavior, but I'll keep an eye out for it.  Thanks for the response.
